As ever, since mathematical "sets" of numbers assume every value is different, this reasoning works well with continuous variables and smoothly distributed populations, but was not devised to cope with heavily-tied values. Nor was it devised to allow for the possibility of making the same observation more than once, as would happen if our conservationist counted the same butterfly several times. Fortunately, since we are not doing mathematical stats research, this is not our problem.
