Just a note

In this case we assigned the information to variables X and Y using these instructions:

Of course, you do not have to call your variables 'X' and 'Y' in order to produce a scatterplot of them - nor do you have to assign information to those variables as shown here. We have called them X and Y partly for sake of simplicity and clarity, but mostly because that is how they are referred to in many elementary stats books.

Notice also that R distinguishes between uppercase and lowercase letters. So variables X and Y are not equivalent to variables x and y!
