Just a note

Do not confuse ranking with coding. Ranked observations refers to their magnitude, or importance, whereas which codes are used for which attributes may be entirely a matter of convenience. For example, you could arbitrarily code furry mice as '1', nude as '2' and wrinkled mice as '3', without implying anything about their relative importance. Attempting to rank, or take the average of such data is obviously meaningless.
