Just a note

Use of the term 'collapse' is sometimes restricted to combining categories of an ordinal or nominal variable so as to reduce the number of categories. Most commonly an ordinal variable (with several categories) is collapsed to a binary variable (with just two categories). However, it is also used (as we have here) to cover grouping observations of a measurement variable into class intervals.
