Just a note

In the case of a discrete variable, such as the number of voles, you may feel uncomfortable at the possibility of ending up with quantiles of, say, 1.5 voles. In that situation the temptation is to round to, for example, the nearest whole number of voles. The problem with this approach is it is awfully easy to introduce bias - particularly if your sample size is small and highly skewed.
