Just a note
The great advantage of box and whisker plots using the median and interquartile range is that they display the true level of variability above and below the median. Use of the standard deviation assumes that distributions are symmetrical, hence variation above and below the mean is assumed to be the same.
The following code produces much the same sort of result using R.
