Just a note

The y with a hat (^) over it indicates that value is an estimate - in this case assuming x (our PCV) is normally distributed. In practice, of course, it is unreasonable to assume a sample will estimate anything with a probability of 1 - in other words, with complete certainty! But the highest observation in any sequentially-ranked sample always has a rank of r = n, thus a relative rank of n/n = 1. The simplest way to allow for this is to subtract 0.5 from each rank.
