Just a note

A 5 percent 'trimmed' mean is an arithmetic mean calculated from a sample of observations from which the 5 percent highest and 5 percent lowest observations are deleted. The 90 percentile range is the maximum minus the minimum of the same, but trimmed, sample.

By this definition the median is therefore the 50 percent trimmed mean, and the interquartile range would be a more robust estimator of concentration. Fairly obviously however, the more information you loose by trimming observations, the less power you have - and the more the behaviour your estimator will depart from that of the usual parametric estimators.
