Just a note We use the Cochran (1968) terminology here, rather than the more common 'cross-sectional study', because the latter refers strictly to any study carried out at one point in time. The key feature of an analytical survey is that one is taking a probability sample from the population in order to then search for associations. It is an exploratory approach with a consequent weak level of inference for causation.
